Given the predominance of hoi ioudaioi on the mouth of the narrator, they evidently belong to the "earthly narrative." The way that they merge with and sometimes replace, or are replaced by, other, more specific, groups confirms this (for example, the "Jews" of 18:14 refer back to the "chief priests and Pharisees" of 11:47-53). There are appropriate questions to be asked of the way in which they are represented in this "earthly narrative," some of which we have already asked, and the specific term remains perplexing. We know, perhaps, that Jesus is a Jew, although only by inference, and also, indeed, if she is a trustworthy character, because the Samaritan woman explicitly tells us so (4:9); it is, however, possible that we are expected to react to her words with the same sort of ambivalence or knowing superiority as we may to "the Jews" who think that they know the father (and mother) of Jesus, son of Joseph (6:41-42). It is on this earthly level that "the Jews" oppose and seek to kill Jesus. Yet, presumably, it is also on this level that Jesus says "salvation is from the Jews" (4:22).16
